This practical face-to-face course explores the care of adults with nasogastric (NG) and nasojejunal (NJ) feeding tubes. Learners work through realistic scenarios, demonstrations and supervised practice using training equipment.

Develop the knowledge and practical skills to support safe nasal tube feeding, maintain daily care and recognise complications early.
NG tubes deliver nutrition into the stomach, while NJ tubes deliver it into the jejunum, part of the small intestine. The course explains how these differences affect feeding, medicines and safety checks.
To prepare learners to support prescribed enteral feeding, hydration and routine tube care within their role, document care accurately and escalate concerns promptly.
Nurses, senior care workers and team leaders whose duties include, or will include, adult enteral feeding and tube care.
The course supports staff working in care homes, hospitals, community services and other adult health and social care settings in England. Practical activities are matched to learners’ responsibilities and authorised duties.
The course covers established NG and NJ feeding tubes, required checks before use, infection prevention, daily care, prescribed feeds and flushes, medication-safety principles, monitoring and escalation.
Tube insertion, replacement, repositioning and independent X-ray interpretation are outside this course’s scope. Completion does not replace device-specific training, workplace competency assessment or employer authorisation.
By the end of the course, learners should be able to:
Learning includes tutor-led discussion, clinical scenarios, equipment demonstrations and supervised simulated practice.
Successful completion requires achievement of the course’s knowledge-assessment requirements and an individual practical assessment. Feedback identifies strengths, learning needs and any further supervised practice required.
Successful learners receive a Clarivive MedInsight Ltd certificate recording completion of the course and its required assessments.
The learning supports continuing professional development through knowledge, practical learning and reflection. The certificate records achievement in the training setting; workplace practice remains subject to assessed competence, local policies and appropriate authorisation.
Clarivive MedInsight recommends refresher training every 12 months, or sooner following changes in practice, identified learning needs, employer requirements or an extended period of non-practice.
