Adult choking is a time-critical emergency that can quickly lead to unconsciousness, cardiac arrest, brain injury or death when the airway becomes completely obstructed. Staff must therefore be able to recognise choking promptly, distinguish an effective cough from a severe airway obstruction, and take immediate action without waiting for clinical support to arrive.

This face-to-face practical course gives learners the knowledge, confidence and hands-on skills needed to respond safely when an adult is choking. Through trainer-led demonstrations, realistic scenarios and supervised practice, learners will develop a structured response that includes encouraging coughing, delivering up to five back blows, giving up to five abdominal thrusts when required, contacting the emergency services and beginning CPR if the person becomes unresponsive. The course follows the Resuscitation Council UK Guidelines 2025 and current NHS first-aid principles.

Training also addresses common unsafe practices, including blind finger sweeps, delaying the emergency call, continuing ineffective interventions without reassessment, and failing to arrange medical review after abdominal thrusts. Learners will practise communicating clearly, maintaining dignity, working within their competence, documenting the incident and following organisational emergency procedures.

This course is designed to be practical rather than purely theoretical. By the end of the session, learners should be able to recognise an adult choking emergency, select the correct intervention based on the person’s condition and demonstrate the adult choking response safely on an appropriate training manikin.

Aim

The aim of this face-to-face course is to equip learners with the knowledge, confidence and practical skills required to recognise and respond promptly to choking in a conscious or unresponsive adult.

Learners will practise a structured emergency response based on current Resuscitation Council UK Guidelines 2025, including encouraging effective coughing, delivering back blows and abdominal thrusts, summoning emergency assistance and starting CPR when required.

Scope

The course covers:

1. Recognition of partial and complete airway obstruction.
2. Assessment of an effective and ineffective cough.
3. Immediate actions for a conscious choking adult.
4. Safe delivery of back blows and abdominal thrusts.
5. Reassessment after each intervention.
6. Calling 999 and communicating essential information.
7. Management when the casualty becomes unresponsive.
8. Initiation of adult CPR and use of an AED.
9. Actions to avoid, including blind finger sweeps.
10. Adaptations for pregnancy, obesity, wheelchair users and other relevant circumstances.
11. Post-incident monitoring, medical review, reporting and documentation.
12. Practical demonstration and competency assessment using suitable training equipment.

The course focuses on immediate first-aid management. It does not qualify learners to diagnose medical conditions, perform invasive airway procedures or act beyond their competence and organisational responsibilities.

The practical response sequence follows current Resuscitation Council UK Guidelines 2025, which recommend encouraging coughing, followed by up to five back blows and then up to five abdominal thrusts when the cough is ineffective and the obstruction remains.
