Course Aim

To develop the knowledge and practical skills needed to assess or observe, dress, monitor and document common wounds within the learner’s role, while recognising complications requiring prompt escalation.

Who Is This Course For?

Registered nurses, nursing associates, senior care assistants, team leaders and healthcare staff involved in wound care or wound observation across care homes, hospitals and community settings.

Learning and practical activities are matched to each participant’s responsibilities, existing competence and employer authorisation.

Course Scope

The course covers common acute and chronic wounds, structured assessment, infection prevention, dressing principles, documentation and referral pathways. It includes pressure-ulcer prevention, skin tears, moisture-associated skin damage and awareness of leg and diabetic foot ulcers.

The course supports everyday practice within agreed care plans. It does not replace specialist tissue viability training or authorise independent treatment decisions beyond the learner’s role.

What This Course Covers

1. Skin and wound healing: skin structure, wound types and factors affecting recovery.
2. Wound assessment: recognised frameworks, measurement, tissue, exudate, surrounding skin and deterioration.
3. Infection prevention: hand hygiene, appropriate PPE, aseptic non-touch technique and safe cleansing.
4. Dressing principles: dressing categories, indications, application, removal and exudate management.
5. Prevention and comfort: pressure relief, pain assessment, nutrition and hydration.
6. Professional responsibilities: consent, documentation, clinical photography, safeguarding and incident reporting.
7. Escalation: recognising concerns and referring to tissue viability or other appropriate professionals.

Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course, learners should be able to:

1. Explain the main stages of wound healing and factors that delay recovery.
2. Recognise common wound types and identify when specialist assessment is needed.
3. Apply a structured approach to wound observation, assessment and measurement within their role.
4. Demonstrate infection-prevention and dressing techniques during supervised simulated practice.
5. Explain the factors influencing dressing selection and follow authorised treatment plans.
6. Recognise infection, deterioration and complications requiring escalation.
7. Document wound findings, care provided and changes accurately.
8. Identify personal development needs and the limits of their competence.

Learning and Assessment

Learning includes tutor-led discussion, clinical scenarios, demonstrations and supervised practice. Knowledge checks and observed practical activities assess understanding and performance against the course’s learning outcomes.

Learners receive feedback and identify actions for applying their learning appropriately in the workplace.

Certification

Successful participants receive a Clarivive MedInsight Ltd certificate confirming completion of the course and its required assessments. The learning can contribute to their continuing professional development record.

The certificate records achievement within the training setting. Clinical practice remains subject to role-specific competence, appropriate supervision or delegation, employer authorisation and local policies.

Recommended Refresher

Clarivive MedInsight recommends refresher training every 12 months, or sooner where organisational policy, changes in practice or an extended absence from wound-care duties indicate a need.
